Waco 1986...Mustang ID Needed plus a Skyraider and Spitfire!

An unknown Mustang... anybody have an ID for this one? The 4660 visible on the tail does not compute with this time frame. The only A/C in the registry with this number was destroyed in 1976...

The tail number looks like P-51H 44-64460. Is this the one lost in 1976?

Interresting !

I photographed this very a/c back some time ago when the Champlin Fighter Museum was still open in Mesa, AZ.






Was wondering where it ended up since I did not see it in Seattle, neither at the CAF...

Those two aircraft were both owned by the fledgeling Lone Star Flight Museum at the time. They were still based at Hobby and Thunderbird had not yet arrived. Jim Fausz was just starting to build the collection. Both aircraft were sold along with the FG1D Big Hog prior to the move to Galveston. Some guy named, Arnold, I believe bought a couple of them.

I just noticed that Big Hog is in the background in the first picture.

Gee whiz I hate when they mix up the registrations....it's one thing to do it for a famous or otherwise known combat loss...but to do it with a recently lost airframe...argh...

Thanks for posting that picture of my Skyraider. I don't think I have seen a picture with those drop tanks on the airplane. Those are the tanks I have on the plane now, but I had to completely rebuild them. When I bought the plane they were on the shelf because years ago, one of the mechanics had dropped on of them off of the parked aircraft when it was full and crunched it up pretty bad. They were still painted white with the stripe when I got them.

They look a little different now.

I hadn't ever seen that picture.That's not my airplane, but I wonder if Taylor Energy used it as a template for painting my airplane. Wow, can you imagine people dressed like that at an airshow. And you know in 1955 the ordance on that plane must have been real. Thanks for posting that, it's really cool.

You know Eric, at one time Mr. Taylor thought about donating your airplane to the Marine Corp Museum. They put so many conditions of acceptance on the donation that he finally gave up and said to h3ll with em !

HR2S-1 looking sharp in her blue Marine livery. The other helo "heavy" at the show,
the tandem-rotor Piasecki YH-16A Turbo Transporter is probably at her public debut..she won't make her
first flight till December, and will be gone in a crash in Jan. 1956.

The "Roman Nose" C-130A was quite a shocker...Probably the best shots of one I've seen on the
web! This Herc, 3-3132, was still flying as of 2003 in Mexican service as FAM 3601..I wonder if she's
still going? Wow..
