California P-40N progress

Thu Jan 10, 2008 9:29 am

The P-40N (42-105306) @ Schellville Airport in Sonoma County, CA has made some significant visual progress in the last month. Being rebuilt by owner Chris Prevost, this former US Army aircraft from Austrailia had its wings & fuselage mated together on December 1, 2007.
On Christmas Eve, the Allison was hung & the coolers went on immediately after. Work since that time has mostly been fabricating covers & fairings around the engine & underneath the forward portion of the fuselage.
At some point in its career, this machine was converted to a two-seater. The intention is to fly it this way again with instruments & controls in the rear.
Several years of work went into building (not rebuilding) the wings. As I understand, all that was there to work with initially was about 4 feet of one wing.
It's a real great experience to see these machines fly and an equally great one to witness one going back together.
This one should be a real beauty in the Western skies.

I flew with Prevost in the Stearman in Oct. and he told me he plans to keep it in two-seat configuration to give rides in it. He also intend to offer rides in a P-51D which will be based at Schellville.

Good point about the availability of rides in such a unique aircraft...there aren't too many opportunites in this country to be able to do that. I look forward to the day when the machine gets to the air again.

Yes, apparently the usual pilot (who wasn't flying it at the time of its demise) is still alive somewhere in the LA area, but doesn't like P-40s very much (according to Chris)

ID is 42-105306

The workmanship is really first class

Oh, and Chris, please please please please PLEASE, don't paint a sharkmouth on it!

Rick, the Jenny is indeed gorgeous! Schellville is a lovely airfield, with some very nice people based there.
