Austin Texas

I'm going to Austin for a few days next month. Do you guys know of any warbird type of stuff going on around there? Museums?

Three possible sites within an hour or two of Austin


Nimitz Museum in Fredericksbug west of Austin. I was there a few years ago. They had a few aviation dioramas: B-25 Doolittle Raider on "Deck", Guadacanal Wildcat torn apart in maintenance and a TBM if I remember. The official name of the museum is something like National Musueum of the Pacific War. There are a lot of other interesting exhibits including an outside beach landing exhibit. The aviation exhibits are a small part of the Museum.

The Highland Lakes Wing of the CAF is located northwest of Austin in Burnett. You can see their website for hours and exhibits.

The Centex Wing of CAF is south-southeast of town, about half way between Austin and San Antonio. Their website also gives hours and exhibit information.

Mr. Funk, I think you may be referring to San Marcos, Gary Field
is the Centex Wing.

SE of San Marcos, just off of I-10 is the Old Kingsbury Aerodrome...in
Kingsbury....WW1 Replicas and restorations. Lotsa projects.

You are correct sir! The Centex Wing is located in San Marcos.

Devil Dog B-25 is usually kept at GTU which is Georgetown, just north of Austin.
You are better off going to Lone Star Flight Museum in Galveston or Cavanaugh Flight Museum in Dallas. Austin not aviation friendly, that's why I am working in Florida.

Used to be a Vampire or Venom at Stinson Field in south San
Antonio, but that was 10 yrs.or so ago.

But, if it's WW2 stuff you want, I agree the Lone Star in Galveston is the
most "concentrated" collection to visit.

If your driving, or flying something small..and whether your main interest
is WW2 or not...I highly recommend Rogers place at Kingsbury.
It's on the way, unless your flying commercial.
They have a nice assembly/workshop hanger, an outer "nice-sized"
parking/display hanger, and then the WW1 hangar. And...there are
affable and friendly people there.

Nice green, smooth runway with favorable prevailing breezes....in between
the predictable seasonal thunderheads! Good times right now. Cool fronts
are pushing back coastal humidity...and the rains.

We're in our No SkeeterWeather, in Dec.....but we have warm days to surprise us..so bring a shotgun along anyway...you can "'bag" a few before dinner!

While it is not really in Austin, I have a DC-3 in Waco waiting for parts. Will be there on the 2nd to try and get it up and running and on the way to it's new home in Az

There's also a small little museum at Stinson Field in San Antonio that has one of the Texas Air Museum FW-190s.

Not much else I know of except for some sad statics at the local AFBases.

The Texas Military Forces Museum , Camp Mabry is located in the Austin city limits. They have a few helicopters, a couplel of jets, quite a few military vehicles, guns and nice exhibits indoors. Url "www.kwanah.com/txmilmus"

The 1st Calvary Division Museum and the 4th Infantry Division Museum both located at Ft Hood in Kileen Texas about 90 miles north of Austin. They have some helicopters and a lot of military vehicles from WWII to current. You can do a google search and find out more info.

I also recommend the Nimitz Museum in Fredericksburg.

There is also the Texas Military Museum, located at the West Houston Airport. They have operative military vehicles, a couple of tanks (M-48 for sure) and M-113, a Ferrett, plus trucks and jeeps. There is at least a helicopter inside.

I don't know when it is open, but I can always ask the president, who happens to be a really nice guy.
