Capt Jim Edwards 356th FS 354th FG dismounts his P-51B at Boxted, UK after returning froma escort mission over Germany. Previously named "Sonova Buggar" it was removed when Gen Quesada saw it and had a fit. It was renamed "El Lobo" by the crew chief but to Jim the new name just didn't 'sing'. Jim previously flew 150 Typhoon missions in the RAF with 56 Squadron.

That is an excellent photo Jack. Love the ones that are not staged and are natural. Nice to hear of a US Typhoon pilot too! Thanks for posting these little bits of history for us. :D

Yes, he is still with us and is a awesome guy. He is responsible for many of the surviving antiqueairplanes and a number of warbirds inc a P-40M and P-38L when he ran Harrah's Museum in Reno. He was in charge of their Tri-Motor restoration and flew it for a number of years. He was invited to the Mustangs and Legends but has I predicted declined saying
"fishing for rainbows in the Sierras is more fun than hanging around a crowded plot of asphalt"!. Jim retired has a Lt Col in the CAL ANG and won the William Tell gunnery meet in a F-86 around 1954. He was a ace with 5 kills.

Wade,
Hurry up has Jim won't last forever. You could do a cool print and have him sign it!! His wingman Chuck Simonsom is also still around. Jim inverted and downing a FW-190 on the deck after losing his canopy while chasing it down from 25,000' would be cool 8)

must be an early photo early January 1944

note the 4 mission markings above the exhaust stacks... brooms were painted on for 'sweeps' - i.e. fighter patrol missions

the a/c ended up as 359th FG OTU ship coded CV-P and was salvaged 2nd April 1946

Note the early P-51Bs didn't have the fuselage fuel tank. I also noted the PSP on the ground. Your right, great diorama stuff.
