JDK's famous pointless quiz returns. No.4ish

Wed Mar 05, 2008 4:33 am

OK, it's back.

What is it, where is it, and when? Extra points for the name of the man who flew this type from this location a number of decades earlier, and was back...

There's a larger pic if it's a stumper.

No danger of a pony, but a free warm feeling if you are clever.

Hmmm.
A bit tough?

Clue. It's an American aircraft in American markings.

That would be a picture of a partially extended flap of a P-47 Thunderbolt. Judging by the color, I would hazard a guess and say it is POF's P-47G "Spirit of Atlantic City, NJ" back when it had full invasion stripes.

Correct!

Incorrect!

You've got the wrong sort of colour there. (Clue)

Well done, have a tepid feeling.

The date shouldn't be hard - well, part of it anyway.

I would assume No Guts No Glory, Duxford, but wouldn't have a clue as to the who or where.

August

So near, and yet...

Clue: not a flyer.

Dates. What's the photo of?!?

Wed Mar 05, 2008 10:47 am

'tis the Zemke-marked one in the AAM at Duxford, I believe. It shares the same identity as Tom Duffy's (formerly TFC's) 'No Guts, no Glory' - both are 'bitsas' based on the remains of the same crashed airframe with all the parts mixed up.

Or am I still banned from your quizes James? :(

And notice how sloppily the invasion stripes were applied...

Yes, of COURSE you are Banned Mike. :) AND you are meant to be busy. Get back to it. ;)

OK. It's the P-47 at the American Air Museum at Duxford.

Any guesses as to the date the photo was taken (the clue is the stripes) and the P-47 pilot who was at Duxford on 'that date'?

Indeed Nathan, the correct answer isn't 'MysteryStripes.jpg'

(PS: bdk; it's about the only set of stripes I can recall seeing that look like they may have really done back then. It partly inspired the back page article in Warbird Digest No.1.)
