A great Supermarne Walrus ... and some other (US) Stuff

Thanks to Martin (Swiss Mustangs) I was directed to this great website with these couple of great colo(u)r shots of an Air Sea Rescue Walrus, taken by James 'Wabbit' Hare. Corking stuff, and Mrs JDK rather liked the Venice, Rome and Pisa stuff too!

There's a story that a senior USAAF officer caught sight of a Walrus like this, at a distance on the far side of the airfield. Driven round it a couple of times in a Jeep (he's an American, he wasn't going to walk, was he?) in silence he eventually signalled the driver to take him back to the Mess. On the way off, he said. "Well, son, now I have seen everything."

Nice find! It's unusual to find color photos of utilitarian aircraft like the WALRUS, The color P-47 stuff is especially interesting being from a non 8th A.F. unit and is most welcome too!

JDK you seem to be pretty good on British types I've never heard of ... so can you tell me anything about the Supermarine Stranraer? Other than the basics I've found on Google I havent heard much about it.

I saw the Walrus picture and figured I'd give it a shot.

I never knew it existed until a friend gave me a model kit that had been in his basement last month. (I'm building it now).

Well, there's this book by one JDK on the type. AFAIK, the only published book on it...

Perhaps RJ Mitchell's best design? (he designed some single seat 1936 fighter type no-one has ever heard of.)

You can download a selection of pages on the types there for free.

You should also ask DavyMac, as his museum has the largest surviving chunk, and I believe a good deal of info, and there is one complete surviving Stranny at the RAF Museum Hendon. AFAIK, the most comprehensive set of photos of it are in my book.

Apart from that, I know nothing about the type.

Great stuff on that site!

The photos of the men "ready to ship out to another theatre of war" is interesting from a modern point of view. The men and the country were in this thing for the long haul...and to risk opening the Bomb box again...thanks to Truman and the Manhattan project, ti was not a long haul.

I've just checked. We (that's the publisher) haven't got any copies left, so it is out of print. I'll have a check in my vault and see if I have any left, in exchange for your gold.

Alternatively, if you do a bit of searching you might find a copy in stock with an online publisher, or secondhand. DON'T order it with someone like Amazon who offer it 'after a period of weeks'; it'll never arrive.

Ztex, yes, great stuff. It looks like the guys had a good war (after all people pay to go to Cannes, Rome, Pisa and Venice these days) until you think about the things that wouldn't make the photos...
