Can anyone make sense of these serial #'s? I am by no means a Mustang expert, and taking a quick look at Baugher's list didn't seem to help. Does anyone have any thoughts? While we're at it, does anyone have a list of what P-51s served in the OK ANG? I've never seen such a list.

I shouldn't tell you this but I have a very good friends who flew P-51s in the OK ANG and has a LOT of photos!!!
BTW did you call JCW??

These may be from the brief period that some ANG a/c used a shortened tail number; in other words "43174" could mean either 44-63174 or 44-73174. The other one would be 44-63498/9 or 44-73498/9. Baugher's list doesn't mention the fates of these Mustangs - would SwissMustangs like to add some info?

Does he have more Indian Headress insignia shots that show the whole a/c? That's make a neat model. The OK NG book I have has one shot of such a plane and indicates that they were eventually told to take the insignia off - as it violated regs. Too bad. It'd be kind of fun for each state to come up with their own insignia in peacetime operations stateside.

Jack-
Would LOVE to see those shots from your friend! I've got some folks here who should have some similar shots; this was just what I had on hand at the moment. I've got some shots of T-33s, C-124s, C-97s, A-7s and F-16s from the OKANG. But not many. And I did talk to JCW. We're working on his project, hopefully getting closer.
The suggestions on the s/n are interesting. I had looked on the web for other period ANG shots from other states, and they seemed to have entire s/n on them. I wonder if the OKANG was different for some reason?

If that's right it must be the 47 serial # as it has the later version access panel (vertical rectangle) -- but I thought the 44-73xxxx still had the standard size access panel? Swiss mustangs can u help????

Jack, I'm another who would love to see some of those pics. I have gotten to know the former Commander, General Newman and know that he would love to see them also. There doesn't seem to be much documentation from this period. Any posts would be appreciated....

nearest a/c is 44-73174 [44-63174 was lost with the 78th FG 84th FS coded WZ-T - a/c lost with 1/Lt. Willis H. Lutz - RTD; pilot b/o & a/c crashed near Hauset (B); shot down by friendly fire - American AAA]
the other a/c is 44-73499 [44-63499 was sent to the 15th AAF MTO and was salvaged in Italy 7th September 1945]

the 185th FS 118th FG OK ANG used this pattern of serial numbers for some time - usually the full serial was painted on USAF and USANG F-51's, i.e. the last digit of the FY plus serial
here's another example of an OK ANG F-51 - serial 44-73263

I can make a listing from my database to give you a start....
the OK ANG later (post-Korean War) reverted to the 'usual' presentation of the serial - see below
serials:
45-11368, 45-11639, 44-74989, 44-74838
