Wreckage of giant seaplane found off Pearl Harbor

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) _ University of Hawaii researchers cataloging the debris around a sunken Japanese midget sub outside Pearl Harbor have made a giant discovery.

What they found is the wreckage of one of the gigantic seaplane called the ``Marshall Mars,'' one of the largest aircraft ever built.

The plane crash landed in the open ocean during a test flight off Diamond Head in the spring of 1950. Although the crew managed to escape to safety, the plane burned and sank and the wreckage was never found.

But then in August, deep-diving scientists from the Hawaii Undersea Research Lab came across the inverted keel of the ``flying boat.''

Researchers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration confirmed the discovery during a survey late last week.

The Marshall Mars was part of a trans-Pacific Navy transport service in the years after World War Two. The giant plane had 200-foot long wings and once carried 308 people -- a record at that time.
