I'm not neccessarily oppposed to not flying rare aircraft but how about pulling them out once in while and doing an engine run and taxi. Make that plane the museums featured aircraft for that week.

Yeah, they should stick a -3350 up front, full airways-equipped panel, F-102 wheels and brakes, and fly it around the airshow circuit. If it proves to be fast enough, how about chopping a few feet off each wingtip and running it around the pylons at Reno?

I would say that calling something people have put YEARS of effort into restoring a "dead airplane" is pretty rude of YOU. Opinions are one thing, but your comment was obviously meant as a slap and intended to stir up controversy. You can't expect to make an insulting remark like that and then pretend to be offended by the response.

A George is a natural partner for a B-29. I'm glad both the AFM and the NASM have them displayed close to each other.

My brother called me over the weekend and asked if I was planning a visit to NMUSAF in the near future. I hadn't been, but this sounds like a good excuse for a road trip (especially if I can get him to split the cost of gas!) Fortunately, the museum's only about four hours away.

Having covered this restoration for "Flight Journal" and seeing the "Shiden-kai" up close - Hats off to the USAF Museum!

They did a superb job in preserving her. It also makes a lot of the surviving WW II IJN vets happy. I also know of no better way to preserve this piece of history (my opinion). She is one of just FOUR survivors worldwide (three are restored/one unrestored).

An absolute must read book for everybody even remotely interested in Warbirds should be Restoring Museum Aircraft by Robert Mikesh, the senior aviation curator of the Smithsonian for decades.
In his book he comes right out and calls the airplanes "dead" and relates the thinking behind the museums philosophy. Gang, these guys are trying to preserve the airplanes for Centuries, for a time when the question may well be "what is an internal combustion engine?" " What was an airplane? How quaint..."

it's great to see this geaorge restored and back on display whilst i'm a fly it at all cost's kinda guy these rare aircraft should not be risked.
