Planning my Trip to Orlando

Wed Jun 11, 2008 11:36 am

My better half and I are planning a trip to Orlando and we are taking along my 6 year old niece. This will be her first flight and trip to Disney. We expect she will be on a high for most of the summer.

Anyway... I hope to get some time to visit sites in Orlando...

...and the surrounding areas...

I have a few questions that I hope people on WIX can help me with. I want to make the best use of my spare time and don't want to go chasing warbirds which I won't be able to photograph. So here it goes...

NOTE: The list has been moved to my latest post in this thread.

I am looking forward to any assistance you may be able to provide. I expect I will have more questions once I start looking at the surrounding areas.

Mike,

I can answer question #4. Margaritaville is outside of the Universal Parks at the Universal Citywalks. It is the cityscape that leads to either Islands of Adventure or Universal theme Parks. No Admission is required to view the aircraft.

Please see the Jimmy Buffet's Grumman Albatross Hemisphere Dancer at

Enjoy your trip!

Glenn

From what I remember, the Albatross at Margaritaville is elevated on some sort of pedestal, so I don't think it accessible from the point of climbing inside.

BTW, if you know anyone who works at Disney (or can make friends really fast) you may be able to get free guest passes (park hopper passes) and save the money on admission.

Answer to #5, the H52 is right outside the Planet Hollywood building, drop down SW of your map marker to the large round blue sphere, you can see the H52 parked just south of this building before the parking lot.

Come on down Mike, I can give you some hints to get around. Bill and Tim have been down here recently and had a good look around Kissimmee.

There is no F-4 at Orlando Exec. Local AFA chapter is working it still.

This is good to know.

We already have everything arranged. It is not cheap, but I think my niece will have a blast.

Sounds good. I’ll try to let you know when I will have a chance to visit your area. I would like to see White 1.

Excellent. Thanks for the tip.

I still need to look into questions about sites in the area surrounding the greater Orlando area. For now the revised list of questions below.

Mike

#1: Is the A-4 at the Naval Air Warfare Training Systems Division in Orlando accessible to the public?

#3: Apparently there is a H-34 fuselage in a paint ball park in Orlando. Here is my best guess location...

...Can anyone provide a better location? Just zoom in and right click on the map for the coordinates.

#6: Apparently there is an AH-1 displayed in a Veterans park in Kissimmee. I need a better map reference...

You could make a little trip west on I-4 to Polk City and visit Kermit Weeks' collection at the Fantasy of Flight Museum too!

Oh I know about the Fantasy of Flight. However, my spare time for such things will be extremely limited, and with the price of admission there I need to think twice about bringing along two others who may not be as into it as I am. I think I will be doing will to get to Kissimmee and a numer of roadside warbirds.

I have added some items to the list below. Hopefully someone can help out.

There is an H-13 helicopter in Jungle Jims restaraunt. It is one of the ones used in the MASH tv show.

Thu Jun 12, 2008 5:50 pm

The H-13 in Jungle Jim's is gone. I talked to the guy that bought it. It was one of the helicopters that Bob Morse bought from the Army in the early 1970's. It was registered as N73550. My father did the restoration of it to flying and we flew it back in the olden days in Marcy NY.

I went round and round with the guy that bought it. It was NEVER used in MASH (there was a sign on it that said that which was wrong). The MASH choppers were "D" models (single tank) and this one was an OH-13G with two small tanks. The MASH choppers came out of California and were commercial choppers made over to look military. When MASH was made, this particular airframe was still in the ARMY and they didn't let MASH use them.

I've got a few pictures of it when it was civilian and some when they took it out of Jungle Jim's. It was originally Red/White in about 1972 and then repainted to Orange/Black in about 1977 after an accident. It was in another accident in 1985 in Indiana, then it got sold off to FL some time after that.
