Foes

Mon Jun 16, 2008 4:06 pm

Well, it is Monday and the Foes are friendly, but we are not over the Falls. We have been sitting all day in the hangar waiting to do some photo flying for a Japanese video crew. It was good weather this mornning, when I got here at 8:30, but the camera plane and cameras weren't ready. Then came a storm with some hail, no damage. It is now clear, but the grass runway is soaked, so we are just sitting. Skip Holm is here ot fly the 109, so I've heard some interesting stories.

Bill,
ask Skip about the IFR flight in Levitz' 51 out of Oshkosh 98. Skip was trapped there after the show along with my group out of Az.

Nice shooting Dave. Sorry I never made it down to Niagara South. I was having too much fun up at Hamilton at the CWH. Watch for a very cool page to be added to my website tonight. I had some fun last night, although it was cut short because of the storms in Toronto.

Eric

PS So did you guys kiss and make up :)

Now there's a statement I once thought I wouldn't likely hear again...how very cool that I'm now hearing variations of it all the time!

I personally like the way things are developing now at CWH as well as The Russell Group, Vintage Wings Canada and CAVM. They are moving away from the aishows and having these smaller events.
While airshows have their place the costs involved mean they have to appeal to a larger market than the warbird enthusiasts. As a result the historic warbirds end up taking a back seat.
Great to see this type of event evolving.

photos

It is now Tue am and Skip is aboot to go up in the 109. The weather is a cloudy and cool, but no hail today.
Dave C. Those are nice photos. I wish I'd had a chance to talk to you at the show. I don't know much about the photo issue and don't really have a side. But I wiill say it was a great show. If you've got a Lancaster, 2 Spitfires, a Hurricane, a Diamler engine 109, in a nice green grass place, you 've got a heckof a show. Add in the Sukoi for those whom straight and level is a dirty word, plus a good bunch of Harvards making enough noise to scare anyone, and some pristine Fleets, Tiger Moths, Staggerwing, etc. and it's prety cool. And Rob Gillman made landing a B-17 look pretty easy.
I doon't know Canadian politics, but the Lt. Gov attended the show and seems very popular. He extended his stay to see the Lanc flight with the fighters.

I was lucky enought to attend both events on the weekend and I had a great time...I did see a few familar faces...and my wife really enjoyed both events so she all ready to attend Geneseo in 4weeks :D

Great Pictures Dave...I only wish some of my good shots came out that half as good...I am still in a learning mode on my ground to air shots but I don't mind getting more practice in at the airshows

Luv the Solo Lancaster shots...I always find the Lancaster hard to photograph in the air...maybe it is the dark colours...

Anyway had a great time..

Andrew

hail no

Tue Jun 17, 2008 4:30 pm

How about that hail! Do we like it? Hail no! Anyway it is Tue late afternoon. Skip did get one brief flight in the 109. It rained more while he was out and when he came back there were water pudels on the grass runway. He hit one just after touchdown and slewed around pretty sharply, but caught it ok . He did say post flight that he wasn't anxious to do that again. I haven't had a chance to get up in the Spitfire in between rain showers, but we did pull the planes out and do ground interviews with the video crews.
I have had ample time to do cockpit practice and get familiar with this Spitfire. It has a number of differences from mine, not major ones, but I am comfortable with it now. So it's frustrating to have to sit on the ground while the weather just won't give us a break. When I flew Sunday conditions were just about ideal, but not since. I could sure use a couple of hours to feed the fix and get tuned up again.
There's also a perfectly good Harvard sitting here asking to be flown.

Thanks for the posting Bill. Nice to know what is going on!

Couldn't make the show as I am stuck down south. Saw something on Youtube and you and Skip looked great in that formation with the brit bomber.

Hope you get some more flying in.
