Re-engined Sea Fury Qs

Sat Jul 19, 2008 9:05 am

The Sea Fury's always been one of my favs, among the sexiest a/c ever made. I've been curious about them being converted to R-4360s & R-3350s. It seems the -3350 is more common, at least for non-racing ones. It seems the obvious choice for stock looks at least, except for losing the 5 blade prop. Too bad there's not a suitable 5 blader for a -3350, that's one of the things that makes it a Sea Fury! Anyway, I've read the Centaurus was pretty difficult to maintain, so I see that point for the change as well. Why, tho, the -3350? Why not an R-2800? Availibility? Just exactly, without having to right a book at least, is involved in converting to the -3350? Also, from what I've read, displcement wise, the Centaurus compared to the -3350, but most of the -3350s were capable of more power, so how much does that increase its performance or is the -3350 generally derated or what? I don't especially care about the conversion to -4360 power, but if someone has & wants to provide some info on that conversion, I'd be intersted to know, anyway. Thanks.

IIRC the 3350 is closer to displacement and power of the Centaurus. It also is physically closer in dimension and weight so the cowling and looks can be kept closer to the original. The Prop is located in close to the same location as well as is the exhaust and cowl flaps. That is why they look close to the original.
The 4360 is different in all of the above.
