USAAF WWII photo archives - Help and advice needed

Tue Jan 04, 2005 5:04 pm

Hello,

Could someone advise me where and how would be the best way to search for and order photos from USAAF archives from internet ?

- I tried the Air Force Historical Center at Maxwell, but their site looks to be down

- I tried the US National Archives site, but it looks so complicated you certainly need an internet PHD to navigate through it.

- Is there anything in the US likr they have in Australia with the Australian War Memorial site where you can search through a database of 10.000's photogrphs.

I'm specially interested in findings air shots of Pacific airfields and photos of Japanese wrecks.

Any help greatly appreciated

Laurent

Based on my reasearch work on USAF aircraft from the 1950s/60s, your best bet is with the National Archives and not with the USAF museum. I even tried to play my "active duty USAF pilot" trump card with the USAF museum, and they still told me to contact the National Archives...

Laurent,
You basically have to go to the archives and copy/scan yourself to really get anything accomplished.
My research partner has made numerous trips to the archives and has copied over 25,000 (yes 25,000) photos. He has tons of what your looking for (I talked to him last night about Japanese aircraft and he said he had around 600 photos). He charges a very modest price to cover his expenses. Drop him a line at john_bruning_jr@msn.com.
