Return of the Intrepid

Tue Sep 30, 2008 12:11 pm

Those of you in the NY area may be interested to know that the refurbished USS Intrepid is scheduled to return to her pier this Thursday, Oct. 2. The journey from Staten Island to Pier 86 is scheduled for 11:30am to 1:30pm, with a stop at the World Trade Center site on the way. Another chance to see the old girl in open water with a flotilla of smaller craft, fireboats etc. The museum reopens Nov. 8.

I liked the Hellcat replica, and even though the Helldiver replica was pretty rough, it was sort of neat. But by getting rid of those two replicas, they are able to get more real warbirds below decks.

True. Would it be an idea if one of the Carrier museums created a temp canopy cover, to envelop the entire or partial flight deck to preserve the aircraft above deck? Do any of you guys think that could be useful to the museum, or destroy the "feel" of a carrier museum?

yeah...perhaps the replica aircraft would have been better suited in a museum rather then in the ocean! :?

Wouldn't it be cool for one of the carrier museums to get a whole group of replica TBM's, Hellcats, and Corsairs and line the whoe deck with them.

Reminder. The Intrepid museum reopens next weekend. Here are some teaser shots from last month's triumphant return down the Hudson (bow first this time!).

Most of the aircraft have been refurbished and some new ones added. In the final shot, you can see some of the changes. F-11 repainted as a Blue Angel (which this airframe was), colorful line-up of MiGs (two of them newly acquired), nice helicopter display (and a new Piasecki down in the hangar deck). The MB339, Kfir, Scimitar and Super Etendard complete the foreign line-up.

I hope to have a report from the flight deck later this month.

Awesome. How close do you live to the museum?

I live a fair distance from it, but I work less than a mile from it.

Those are great. In the one of it arriving, the next frame or so would show the Sheraton across the Hudson where I stayed many night and took the water taxi across to go around town. Thanks for sharing them...

If I come out there this winter, it would be great to meet up if possible.
