I was looking at it from the opposite point-of-view!

The critique of the airplane was that the nose compartment was much improved from the standard B-24H/J, but the flight caracteristics were far from desirable. There was also a B-17E that had Consolidated tail turrets grafted onto it fore-and-aft that was tested in England. It's just about as ugly as this thing, but there was some interest in it.

According to William N. Hess' "Big Bombers of WWII", the graft was an attempt to test the B-17 chin turret in place of the regular turret in order to free up some room in the cramped nose. Apparently operational performance was quite poor, and the idea was tossed after 5 test flights. They did like the working room in the nose, however. (P-216/217)
