Is this the same Hess that used to own and/or fly a Mustang in the 80's?

Yes, I remember that well! Whatever happened to that aircraft, where is it now and who owns it?

Also, does Hess fly anymore or is he retired from flying?

Here:

One of very few WW2 vets to own and fly a warbird painted in his own authentic markings from his combat days. Well, almost his own combat markings. His original bird was named "Carolyn's Vergeltungswaffe" (the term means "revenge weapon" and is what the V stands for in V-1 and V-2) but Carolyn's name did not make it onto his restored airplane.

Thanks for the info, August!

Ah, I see that is the old Johnny Rutherford machine! That is the first Mustang that I sat in the cockpit of back in the 70's when Johnny had it. I was wondering where the aircraft went. :D

No doubt one of the photo archive guys can post a wartime pic of Hess and his Mustang. I have one in an old EAA Warbirds magazine.

How many guys have had the chance to fly a restored airplane in their old markings? I can think of:

Hess Bomberger, Chuck Yeager, Bud Anderson, and Bruce Carr.

And didn't Jimmy Doolittle deliver the B-25 to the USAFM? And did Bud Mahurin ever fly the POF P-47?

Don't forget Steve Ritchie, when he flew the Collings foundation F-4 when it was painted up like his aircraft.

Pete Peterson - P-51D "Hurry Home Honey"
Tommy Hayes - P-51D "Frenesi" (from the back seat anyway)

Robin Olds, too - with a twist: the actual airframe! Scat VI or whatever it is/was, and from the front seat with a 'helper' in the back.

Bud Tordoff saw his actual wartime airframe fly again in later years, and in his markings - 353rd FG's Upupa Epops (Flying Heritage Collection), which must have been a thrill for him.
