Lackland Airfest 2008 photos

Went to the show today with the Alamo Liaison Squadron and had a good time. The warbirds were very sparse - which concerned me. Saw Lady02 there with her plane and had a nice chat during the Tora! Tora! Tora! show. Did see a pair of some beautiful P-51s - including one I've only seen online before. So here's the first set of pictures.

Princess Elizabeth and Double Trouble II - these arrived during the show, made one pass, and then landed. I'm not sure if they were announced or not.

Image
Regrettably, my sister's never heard that they were coming, so the shots I have were with my point and shoot.

The military parked them on the "hot" ramp - as the military folks seem want to do, and this is a close as I could "get" with my zoom lens.

I finally got to see an F-22 fly! Here's a video clip of the flyby: http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/8g ... gHDaSUKCww

This was a heritage flight with the F-22, F-15, F-16, and a P-40.

Here's a shot of our display.

BTW - my BIGGEST beef with the airshow was that there were guys walking around with coolers selling beer - of all things. I'm not one who believes that all alcohol is absolutely wrong, but I just couldn't believe that it was being so prominently served and promoted. It really started to bother me when I had some guys asking me questions around the aircraft who seemed a bit drunk. I was just glad they didn't get too belligerent.

More later. Possibly tomorrow night or Monday.

Oh, BTW for those of you up in Northern parts - it was a BEAUTIFUL sunny day with a nice amount of cloud cover. About 80 degrees or so.

So looked at your album from the video, is that all that was there, other than the 25 is that all LSFM brought? Yeah really low Warbird turnout  :!:
Thanks.

Ryan,

We used to go to the SAC Open House every summer in the late seventies and eighties at Offutt. There were beer tents set up in strategic locations and some of them were manned by different Service-related organizations as fundraisers. They DID raise funds judging from the crowds around them! I don't remember any mobile beer sellers, but they could have been there. I post this to confirm that I've seen beer sold at a DOD sanctioned airshow/open house as well.

Thanks for the updates.

Ya know, I really wanted to get over there and thought several times that I might get to see you guys but just didn't really get a good chance. I've got one from a distance here:

It's in the left corner. Honestly, I never made it past the O-2 down the line.

I did get some flying pictures of Spooky at Wings Over Houston.

I never even got to go see Glacier Girl up close - though my sister got a really nice shot of the nose.

On static.

The Tora birds and other warbirds flying didn't get opened up for viewing until about the time the Blue Angels started flying - which meant hardly anyone visited them... The P-40 stayed on the "hot" ramp and was off limits - hence my being able to get "clean" shots. :x It's nice to be able to get pristine shots, but I'd much rather see them being enjoyed by the crowd with folks talking about their history.

I don't know. Because of their being cordoned off as part of the "hot" ramp you really couldn't find out too much. I *think* that one of the Kates that was supposed to be there (310 with the bomb underneath) wasn't at the show on Saturday. It was at Stinson (down the ramp from where I work) the day before and apparently got stuck there for some reason. Will probably see later today if it's still there.

Lynn, Pat was in the light green one. I understand he had a gear failure while doing media rides at Stinson Friday; however, flew it back to San Marcos rather than land there. Did little additional damage on landing at HYI however the gear mechanism was already really messed up (ie causing it to be stuck at about a 45 during the flight back)

Oh, did I mention that there was a nice little black plane at the show...

You've got to tell us some of your dad's stories sometime. You know I'm collecting L-bird stories for my www.lbirds.com website.

On a similar note there was a guy there who said he flew L-5s in the war with an artillery unit in Europe - but didn't give me much information. I'm going to try and track him down later.
