B-23 crash (5/31/43) looking for info.

Mon Dec 01, 2008 8:34 pm

Any info on a B-23 that went down near Reno May 31, 1943.

I am trying to figure out which A/C this was. Going by Baugher's site it seems that 39-40 or 39-49 are unaccounted for and could possibly fit the time line.

Just looking for more info to complete the story about Earle Victor Anderson, Rutgers class of '41.

That airplane was 39-29 and is listed on the AAF Form No. 14 Aircraft Accident Report as a C-67, which is a modified Douglas B-23. The airplane, collided with rising terrain at Smith Creek Valley, Nevada, approximately 36 miles west of Austin, Nevada, killing 11 crew and passengers. Pilot was 1Lt. E.V. Anderson.

The airplane had taken off from Peterson Field, Colorado, on a personnel transport flight to Reno, Nevada. The airplane never made it and was declared missing; the wreckage was found on June 3, 1943. Investgation revealed that the airplane, while flying in instrument conditions, collided with the 10,000-foot level of Desatoya Peak at a point about 150 feet short of the top while flying in a southwesterly direction. The airplane was flying at about cruise speed while in a slight descent at the time of impact, estimated to be about 1702 PWT. The airplane exploded violently into flames upon impact, killing all eleven on board instantly.

There is an Army Air Forces Form No. 14 Aircraft Accident Report for this one; See Craig Fuller at AAIR or write to Maxwell Field, Alabama for a copy . The accident is also summarized in Volume I of FATAL ARMY AIR FORCES AVIATION ACCIDENTS IN THE UNITED STATES, 1941-1945.

Good Luck with your research.

It really is!

I was simply going through the "Some Gave All" write up at my internship and noticed the mention of a B-23... and thought that was a little unusual.

Now its just a matter of how far should I go with it. Thanks to Tony I've got all sorts of good info.

Anyone have a pic of 39-29?
