Something odd about that pic. There's no air intake on the top of the cowling. But the chin scoop looks to me like a P-40E or later version.

An F or L model perhaps, as the later K and N had a scoop on top as well...too many variants, have to do more digging, a serial # would help just a bit!

F or L. Looks like the long tail version to me as well.

It is a 79th FG bird (Merlin engine = no scoop). Is this the one that crashed in Italy and was unearthed not too long ago and put in a museum in "as found" condition?

Think I'll wander down to the beach and see if I can find one of those! Definitely could be Sicily or Italy from the markings.

Nope. Different bird, but same unit: 79th FG/86th FS

Found where the pic came from, german Ebay, inscription on the back said

the first firing of 1./heavy army anti-aircraft dept. 313 in Italy in 1943. Back-sided accordingly marks.

or something to that effect, so Italy it is!!

Thanks for the clarification Dan. Didn't know if it was the same one.

You're all wrong!

It's the submarine P-40 from "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" after the Captain forget to lower his landing gear when he rolled up on the beach!
Where's Gwyneth when you need her!

WHAT?! I mean, yeah it was all CG generated,

and it wasn't 100% accurate with the Warbird scenes,

and it may have received low ratings,

But its a cool movie!!!!!
