Day of Infamy

Sun Dec 07, 2008 2:08 pm

Today is Pearl Harbor Day. I haven't seen much on WIX, and very little on TV about it. But Obama just gave a very nice tribute to those vets when he announced and introduced Gen, Shinseki as the Sec for Vet Affairs.

Remember Pearl Harbor! Yesterday while purchasing our x-mas tree, the guy selling the trees noticed the USS Arizona cap I was wearing and said his father is a Pearl Harbor Survivor having been on the light cruiser USS Phoenix at the time of the attack. I'm sure he has a few great stories to tell!

There was a History channel special on survivors from Pearl. Amazingly some of the U S vets met with some of the Japanese pilots in Hawaii. There was a torpedo pilot who was one of the ones who sunk a ship, ( W. Va.?) meeting an sailor that had been on that very ship. There was forgiveness and understanding from most, however there was one vet who had been on the Arizona that did not share any good feelings after all these years.

Just saw on our local news that there were ceremonies here in Battle Creek at Fort Custer, and another up the road in Grand Rapids with some PH vets. Also a bit of coverage of the ceremonies at Pearl itself (apparently over 2000 WWII vets were in attendance.)

Good to know the event isn't forgotten.

There was a memorial service here in Charleston, SC, aboard the USS Yorktown, which included laying a wreath in the harbor. Several vets spoke. A very moving ceremony.
