and the 'dust' blowing around is volcanic ash, the equivalent of blowing 80 grit sandpaper (minus the paper) into every crevise and inlet the wind can get to-
In Anchorage some folks play a game and try to figure out the exact day it will freeze for Winter then take the car through the carwash so it will stay clean and dust free for a few days.
