Motoyama Airfield - Iwo Jima -

WILL RISE NO MORE FOR THE RISING SUN - Two Fifth Division Marines inspect one of the Japanese planes wrecked on Motoyama Airfield number one Iwo Jima, by the terrific naval and aerial bombardment that preceded the Leatherneck landings.

By this stage of the war the numerical and material advantages of the USN were really putting the hammer down. In three aerial sorties out of Iwo, the Zeros, once masters of the sky, were smashed with 90% casualties. 71 out of 80 shot down.

I'm surprised there is that much of that bomber left after the pounding the airfields took!
