When I was touring the NMUSAF restoration shop a couple weeks ago, they had a bunch of drop tanks that the tour guide said the museum plans to hang on Betty Jo so she'll be displayed in her record-breaking configuration. The guide said that although the museum has the type of wing racks specified in the paperwork, they don't actually fit the airplane. Sounds like somebody "fudged" the paperwork rather than get approval for a non-standard mod.

When Col. Bob Thacker retired he had a hobby shop in Costa Mesa, Ca and was a very active RC Scale builder and competitor. He was always very nice and just one of the guys at his shop or the flying field. It was after several years of knowing him that I found out about his record breaking flights. As far as I know he is still with us. Don
