Late-war Australian P-51s

Looking through some negatives scanned from my late uncle's photo album, I found an image of 11 Australian marked P-51Ds in flight. Squadron code is AM; four I could make out were J-AM, S-AM, C-AM and G-AM. This was shot in the summer of '45 when my uncle's F-7 of the 2nd Photo Charting Squadron was flying recon out of Puerto Princesa. What squadron are the Mustangs from? Were they the first ones in the RAAF to see combat?

Hi Chris
The (US built) Mustangs belonged to 77 Squadron. (Squadron code AM) They equipped with Mustangs from September 1945 and as such saw no active service in WW2. The squadron was posted to Japan as part of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force. They were initially based at Bofu and later Iwakuni. When the Korean War broke out the Mustangs did finally see active duty commencing on July 2nd 1950. They re-equipped with Meteors in April 1951.
