Congratulations, it's been a long road. Doesn't seem like 5 months.

Ike-damaged Lone Star Flight Museum to reopen

From staff reports
The Daily News
Published January 30, 2009

GALVESTON — The hurricane-damaged Lone Star Flight Museum will reopen Jan. 31 after five months of being closed.

The museum was flooded with 6 feet of water when Hurricane Ike slammed ashore Sept. 13. Many of the vintage planes were spared damage because volunteers flew them to Houston and other cities throughout the state.

Other planes and artifacts were not so lucky. The storm deposited 400 cubic yards of debris in and around the museum and soaked planes in corrosive salt water.

Volunteers, including sailors from the USS Nassau, helped clear debris and clean the airplanes.

The museum will reopen Saturday with a newly remodeled gift shop, stocked with aviation-related books, toys and clothing.

The museum is also offering rides on the historic B-25 Mitchell and the Stearman.

Other historic war planes, B-17, B-25 and SBD Dauntless bombers and Spitfire, P-47 Thunderbolt, F6F Hellcat and F4U Corsair fighters, will be on display.

The museum, 2002 Terminal Drive at Scholes International Airport, will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Wonderful!!! About how close to pre-storm damage is it? How about an update on the aircraft that were damaged?

Hmm, last time I saw the Spit was over in Breckenridge, Texas in pieces??

That's great news.

It doesn't seem like 5 months because it's been 4 months.

Well done. When you first saw the damage, I bet this day seemed like a long way away! You can't keep the good folk down. All the very best.

My son was born 1 month later, and he's not 4 months old yet, which is the only reason I know. ;)

Django,
I cant say what the official word is yet on the 4Y but the B-58 got sloshed around from two sides and slammed against the steel roof support posts that didn't give. The left wing is drooping at approximately the spot where the USAF guys hacked and re bolted it and the left main is questionable. It's just not a priority item right now. There has been and still is SO much to do. The 58 is roped off with signs advising to stay out from under it.

Be careful, Doug. This is a public forum and if the General hears that the B-58 isn't a priority he's likely to show up with his chainsaw !

Doug, has it been moved any from its "resting" place since the "great event"?

Steve, I don't know right now today since I haven't been able to get down since Nov. Will update tomorrow or Sunday.
