JDK's guest star with a famous pointless quiz

Wed Feb 04, 2009 3:14 am

OK, a very kind WIX Member sent me this as a possible quiz subject.

We wouldn't want to disappoint anyone, would we? So here it is. It's a puzzler, I'd not have guessed it first off, but I do have the answer. (BTW, I've re-hosted it so you can't work out who our guest quizmeister is - all will be revealed, however. Well, their name, anyway.)

Usual rules, no ponies, just warm feelings for the winner(s) what where, and I guess Mike can play!

1. looks like a belt feed ammunition drum?

2. Cartridge size looks more 20mm cannon than 50 cal?

3. Originally I assumed the construction was US WW2 but the cherrymax pop rivets, steel philips head bolts leans me towards UK post war.

(Having said that the jeep in the background bottom RHS, and the US style electricity pole distribution system points more to the USA, (or perhaps Australia - but less likely for the jeep, so perhaps an ammo box from a US post war jet? with 20 mm cannons - F4 Phantom??)

Beyond that, I have no idea at all???

Used as a mail box also ??????

I think I can say 'no' to Mark's grapeshot effort.

No evidence of any mail deposits or collections at this time. ;)

In the interests of fairness, I should add that one of Mark's locations and tentative origin guesses are in the right arena...

Easy easy F-111 .... it is part of the airframe found between the afterburners nozzles - this is the fuselage protusion houses the fuel dump on it normally.

I could go read my F-111A/E manual but can be bothered at this hour.

Mounted on something more civilised.

some type of fuel cell? Or a dog house?

Nice! I never would have thought F-111.
