C-17 crash reported in Olney, TX by CNN (in error)

Thanks BDK... that sure is sad news if it happens to be true. Can't believe that they haven't found it yet though, considering how big it is. Hope very heartily that no one was hurt.

(CNN) -- Emergency crews have called off the search in Texas for a C-17 transport plane.
Initial Air Force reports of a crash were incorrect, an Air Force spokesman told CNN affiliates.
The Olney Police Department had reported that callers said a plane was flying low to the ground, and then crashed.
Olney is about 45 miles south of Wichita Falls and 130 miles west of Dallas.
A rancher in the area reported that a search was conducted in the area.

Might have been as simple as a C-17 flying low overhead, shaking the house and someone freaking out! They to make a little noise at low altitude!
Better than the clip of the FedEx MD-11 down in Japan. Just horrible. My thought and prayers are with the friends and families of those lost there.

Another example of CNN jumping the gun to make sure they get a story reported before anybody else. I know that's the bread and butter of the news business but how about a little responsible journalism?
Why do I care? I fly on C-17s and my squadron is the only one that uses this low level route on a regular basis. The Herks from Ft.Worth and Dyess use it as do the jets from Sheppard but we are the only C-17s that do. The town of Olney is very near one of our entry points for low level and I figure somebody saw the plane headed down for the route.
When the news came on the TV, the squadron freaked out! In addition to accounting for all our planes and people, they had to field phone calls and visits from family members wondering about their loved ones that were flying today. When I stepped out of the house and saw that C-17s were still doing pattern work and I hadn't gotten recalled to squadron, I figured it was a false report. When I got to work about ten minutes later, all our crews and planes were accounted but they were still trying to figure out where this mystery C-17 came from. Even when the report was admitted to be wrong by CNN, the concerned phone calls kept coming.
I got phone calls from Texas, Washington and South Carolina from people checking to see if I would answer my phone.
This just makes me hate the news media a little bit more.

it was texas...I'm guessing UFO's were involved!

Just as a side note. I live near Mcguire AFB (Forgive me on the spelling) and the C-17s based there come and land at the airport near where I live. I had once seen a C-17 line up on the runway, then use it's own engines to back up for more room. Only airplane I've seen do that, C-17s are pretty cool, but I'll be driving the A-10 if my packet gets approved.
My dad was typed as an MD-11 F/O, and he had complained to me a few times of how hard it was to land at times. I pray for the families of the victims of both recent accidents.
