Horsemen to fly Bearcats for Chino!

Thu Apr 30, 2009 10:09 am

From ASB:

"How about a three-ship Bearcat for Chino?

With the salute to Grumman aircraft, the Horsemen have decided to fly the powerful Bearcats again for the Chino show. For a very special treat, Mr. Al Taddeo, one of the original Blue Angels will be our guest on Saturday.

From First Blue Angel:

Al Taddeo was one of the original Blues chosen.

“It was a very plum assignment, believe me,” said Taddeo, 87, of Newport Coast, Calif. “All carrier pilots, I don’t care who they were at that time, wanted to get in on the program. Literally thousands of aviators wanted to be on the team.”

“They didn’t know what to expect from us,” Taddeo recalled, remembering the spectators and air show organizers during the team’s first public performance June 15, 1946, at Craig Field in Jacksonville. “We put on the show that we had practiced and unbeknownst to us, we were a tremendous hit. The announcers really went wild over what we were doing.”

The team only had been practicing a month. At the time, three planes in a slow roll formation close to the ground was an incredibly dangerous stunt.

“It was a very foolhardy stunt you might say. But we thought we could do it, and we did it,” Taddeo said.

We will be documenting this in an episode of "The Horsemen Cometh."

I'm pumped about this years show. Last year I finally joined the PoF. I wish I could get more time off to go out early and help out.

If you want to volunteer over the airshow let me know!

I'm going down there (someone has to take the ladder so Clay can get in & out of the Tigercat...;) ) & it's going to be my 11yo daughters first airshow. She's been around warbirds for years & seen them fly in & out of VNY, She also helps out when she's off school.
Guess I better bring some tools as I'm bound to end up fixing something :(

Gonna dig out my old TFC flight jacket as well .. That ought to start some rumors ;)
It doesn't fit so well these days, I think it must have shrunk in the closet...

Horsemen flying Bearcats? Doesn't that make them Cat-herders? Or Bear-Wranglers?

Looks like it's going to be a good show, if somewhat biased to Grumman's kid's products, rather than the watercraft for the grown-ups. :D

Just a quick thanks to those who make kind offers for my attendance; I can't justify it at the moment, but the offers are much appreciated - thanks. I'm sure it'll be a blast.

From what I heard today it could be 4 tigercats:
Rod Lewis
Joe Clark
John Sessons

.... & what one is Steve Hinton flying?

Steve Hinton yesterday confirmed that there would be 2 Tigercats and 5 Bearcats at Chino. 'Here Kitty Kitty' is already there.
