Midwest SBD Dauntless?

Tue Feb 22, 2005 10:26 pm

I've been hearing rumors of a SBD Dauntless that's being restored or was recently completed in the upper Midwest: Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, etc. Anybody out there know anything about this?

MAPS in Ohio?

No, not the MAPS Dauntless. This one is supposedly relatively recent and being restored to fly. Has a collector traded something with the USN lately to get one of their Lake Michigan SBDs that are in storage at Pensacola? I've heard rumors since last summer.

Then again....maybe it's just that......a rumor.

Ross Jowett sold the remains of a Dauntless that he recovered from Vanuatu to someone in the midwest a few years ago.

I think that the Ross Jowitt bird is the one which ended up at Pima.

Could this other restoration have been the former USAFM SBD which was restored and put up at Midway airport at the end of last year? It was restored in the midwest if I recall, and is now on display in Illinois, so it technically fits the description.

Could be Richard, but, according to the rumor, this Dauntless is privately owned. Very interesting puzzle, which may be just a rumor after all.

Which I think is now at the USS Hornet Museum as Pima just got the A-24B s/n 42-54654 from MAPS.

Jim

Btw, isn't this the former Pima bird?

Yep, 10508 is the ex Ross Jowitt Kiwi airframe that went to Pima in 2002 and now is with the USS Hornet Museum

Doh! I should have remembered that the Pima bird went to Hornet. I've been helping Kevin Smith with some of the details for this, as they are co-operating on some of the SBD related restoration work.

Cheers,
Richard

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I believe the ex-Hornet Museum SBD-4 (BuNo 10508?) has since moved on. Does anyone know where it is now?

I think there are three flyers. C.A.F, PoF, and LSFM.

I guess "eons" means 2009:

Wonder if it's flown since then? Don't hear too much about them flying at airshows or anything, makes me wonder if they just fly their aircraft from the museum occasionally.
