Photo Contest - Edit: Now Five Categories

Tue May 26, 2009 5:21 pm

First off, can someone make this a Sticky?
Second, I would like to start the contest as of Friday, May 29th. I would appreciate if some other WIXers would consider sending me an email to be judges including something about why they consider themselves qualified. I'd like a panel of 5 including myself. I'll be the tie-breaker vote. If I do not get enough volunteers for the contest judging, I may specifically ask for some folks I have in mind to help. Also, if a photographer wants to contribute to the contest and be a judge, they may not enter anything into the category they are judging.

Since I'm the contest author, there may be a few rules you don't like. That's OK with me, but if you want to have a shot at winning my prize, you have to play by my rules.

Categories:

1. Best overall warbird shot - open to all "warbirds" not in current active service (this does not include aircraft such as the BOB Memorial Flight which I do not consider to be in "active" service.).

2. Best vintage-looking photo - the photo of a modern day "warbird" looking the most authentic in it's settings and backgrounds. (ie. that Humvee in the background will be a problem for a P-51.) Clouds are OK.

3. Best L-bird photo - slanted towards the vintage side, but if you have a really compelling photo, enter it anyway!

Rules:

1. Because it's my contest - no vulgarity, nudity, or really skimpy clothing (ie. bikini style stuff) should be showing. If there's nose art on the aircraft in that category, it will be accepted if it's tastefully hidden - like by an engine or such. I know that I cannot control the message board, so I'd ask the moderators to help me keep the thread clean - otherwise I will run the contest over at my site at http://lbirds.forumotion.com/

2. Image editing issues. No CGI or 3d modelling images should be used. Composite photos are allowed (ie. clever Photoshop jobs from images), but must be labeled as such with a copy of the original shown. I don't mind if colors are tweaked or scratches, dust, etc... is cleaned up.

3. Vintage style photographs should be posted in color and in black and white. This is NOT hard to do. You can do this very simply by using Google's Picasa software. Extra points for taking a real vintage photo and duplicating it!

4. Image must have been taken AFTER Jan. 1, 2009.

5. No more than 4 (four) submissions per category per person.

6. I am specifically ineligible for this contest.

7. Contest ending: All submissions must be entered by Nov. 8, 2009.

Prizes - Primarily recognition from fellow WIXers. If I so chose, Your image will be displayed on a website of my choice with the announcement. The L-bird contest winner will receive a signed L-5 brochure from a WWII veteran I know and possible a copy of Box Seat Over He!! if it's a really good shot. I'm still trying to come up with the other prizes - if anyone else wants to contribute they are MORE than welcome.

I will also appoint a deputy out of the contest judges in case for some reason I am unable to see the end of the contest. (different things in life happen, you know). No reason to believe that right now.

Looking forward to some feedback.

Edit - make that FOUR categories...

4. Best maintenance shot - entries due by August 1st.

All other rules apply.

Should I add a fifth category for restoration photos?

You put your personal touch here Ryan  :P

I'm not apologizing for it Jack!:lol:
Basically, what that means is that I'm not disqualifying the aircraft for the paint, but you have to take the picture so as to meet the standards. There are some aircraft locally that I really enjoy taking pictures of, but try to take them from decent angles. I'm not going to DQ a photo for just an ankle showing.

I think a restoration category would be great. :D

Sounds good! Funny you posted this I was wondering what happened with the other photo competition, I see it's been removed from sticky.

Ok, fifth category for restorations - but I don't have a real prize for it at this time. It's due when the maintenance shots are due.

Hi Ryan,
The prize I offered for the maintenance photo still stands. We have a A-4 gunsight cleaned up and ready to go. Just let me know what I can do to help. Would be happy to judge in any category, but feel maintenance is best suited for me.

I have 1,858 pictures of the Ol' 927 reconfiguration on my Photobucket account. I'd like to enter each of those in either the Maintenance and/or Restoration categories in this contest. Y'all just pick the one you think is best.

Uhhh, should we post those entries here in the forums or send them straight over to you? If want us to post them here it might become handy to split all categories.

Reading the rules, it looks like you're SOL, Gary. I think the pics have to be taken in 2009...

Otherwise you'd be a shoe-in for first place!

Sorry Gary but Col Mossie inspecting the P-47D tail wheel strut is my favorite maintenence photo.
But I guess that's still your photo 8) 8)

Well the same rule applies though......not taken in 2009. That'll pretty much leave me out of the running on the contest all together. No biggie though...it'll be neat seeing everyone else's work.

Gary,

No offence was intended. I'm just trying to encourage fresh creativity!
BTW, I still only have one volunteer to help with the judging.
