Reverend I.N. Burchinal's Air Force 1978

Found these slide images from a trip to Isaac Newton Burchinal's church/warbird checkout school in June of 1978. My father, Ed Buerckholtz, and myself had been in Addison, TX looking at a T-6 that day so on the way back to St. Louis we landed at Paris, TX. Mr. Burchinal was very friendly and let us wonder all over the place. I'll try to find the rest of the slides and post some more images of the other planes that were on the field that day. Sorry for the poor quality of the images. I was 14 when I took these photos and not a very talented photographer. The slides are not in great shape and I'm still trying to get the hang of this new HP4050 scanner.

Rick, I took photos of the T-33, T-28, B-25, and the Martin 404 but they must have been on a different roll of film. I'll find them as I sort the slides. They were all mixed up loose in a box, not sure how they got that way. I have photos of the F4U, F9F, Convair, and a few other beasts that were on the field. One of the photos I did find is this one. It's hard to see in this image but on the engine cowling just below the stacks are the stenciled words "In God We Trust". Yeah, I'll bet faith in God was an important part of a trip around the patch in most of this stuff! As usual, my photos are open to all that want them. Copy, print, publish, post, paste, link, or claim it as your own. Knock yourself out. Sorry again for the poor quality.

I remember an episode of Wide Wide World of Sports where Larry Mahan ( World Champion Cowboy at the time ) showed up and he rented the B-17 for flying lessons ! Of course you could do that with just about all of Junior's aircraft.

I like the 3 blade prop on the Mustang. I was there a few times and it was always quite a sight. He was one of those interesting characters that make the Warbird scene so unique.

The prop on the Mustang was actually from his B-17. Junior said that he flew the Mustang with the B-17 prop but no-one ever confirmed that but Junior? Also, I knew of a man that took a couple of rides in the T-33 with Junior, gear was down and locked for both rides.

The B-17 ball turret was just a shell cut to fit...you can still see the skin patch over the former opening. It was attached to the fuselage exterior by the studio guys and/or Tallmantz mechanics in January 1968 for the filming of 1000 Plane Raid. New paint on the airplane looks pretty good...same squadron codes as used in the movie.

I actually have that show on audio tape. I had gotten a casette recorder the previous Christmas, and taped a lot of stuff, including Baa Baa Blacksheep and Battlestar Galactica. In the pre-VCR era, it was the only option. Mahan flew with Burchinal in the Stearman, B-17, and a P-51 (I'm pretty sure that one had a stock prop, though!)

No doubt, Junior was an original. I've seen it reported that his full name was Isaac Newton Burchinal. How cool is that? We did not purchase either T-6/SNJ we looked at that day Mark, Instead my father and Ed purchased one that you had in inventory a month or so after these photos were taken. I've found the images of you delivering our SNJ-5 to Arrowhead Airport thirty one years ago! We still have the plane and it's still wearing the same paint so It looks about the same. The people in the photos all look a bit different today. Further proof that we are just the lucky custodians of this stuff.

Just read Budd Davisson's report on Airbum of his getting a B-25 type rating in Junior's B-25. There may be more reports on Airbum.com that Budd Davisson did on flying Junior's aircraft.
