Anybody have any info or know the plans for the PBY that is at the airport in Sanford, Maine?
There is a photo of it in the June issue of the Atlantic Flyer but no info.

I have not seen it, but The Col. used to talk about it alot.
I was chatting about the old NWM airplanes corrosion problem a few weeks back, and I asked about those guys, I was told that they had a similar center section spar corrosion issue.

The PBY is still (as of last Oct.) at Sanford. I was there for the annual "Pumpkin Drop" during Sanford's community day. Unfortunately, I did not get to talk with any of the restorers, so I am not sure as to the restoration progress. However, we were allowed to take a look inside... it was mostly together on the inside. One person I did get a chance to talk to said they were looking for the windshield wipers. Apparently, they were on when the aircraft was certified, so the FAA wanted them on this one. I may have a picture somewhere, if I find it, I'll post it here.

How about we pitch in and get them a bottle of Rain-X and call it good?

Hmmm......
Actually, if the airplane does see water ops and departures from the displacement mode, wipers will be needed. Well, only if one wishes to have foward visibility.
Not spray, but sheets of green water will be thrown to the windscreen (and props). Same with the CL-215, and 415, Mallard, Goose, and Albatross. The Cat hull draft is significant and it throws a large blister. Larger than the other types listed here.
Besides the PBY can be certified CAR 3, 4b - the old Transport Category as opposed to restricted, limited or experimental.
Environmentals, and draft (read displacement weight) will effect this too.
One of the reasons the CL-215 has a water displacement mode MTOW limited to 37,700lbs is due to the effect of the spray blister to the prop blades.
At Max. Water Ramp Wt. for the CL-215 (38,000) lbs - 300lbs of fuel is subtracted for start, taxi, run-up - the distance from the prop tip to the water is 2' 9" and the hull will draft 3'8".
For scooping (thats not displacement mode and a spray blister is not a factor) max touchdown is limited to 35, 500lbs.
Normally, we'd do 31, 500lbs., so as to scoop 12,500lbs of water to a MTOW of 43,500lbs.
Anyway, I digress. My point is, there's a reason and a method to the madness. If any operator ever wishes to perform water ops they'll be grateful for the wipers, irregardless of the TC data sheet requirements.

Nevermind the premiums for Hull Insurance!

Drove by last Thursday and saw it sitting there. Didn't get to see it up close as it was getting dark and there was nobody around.

I was just there this weekend for the annual "Pumpkin Drop", which was a blast once again. The people from the airport said that the props had just come back from overhaul and they are still working on the windshield wiper issue. Overall, it looks great. They have some new parts (tires, etc..). They are still working on getting it flying and it sounds like they are on the right track.

the owner is a friend of one our co-pilots...so on the move to Sanford the other day we let him have a few minutes of stick time in the 24. He intends on flying the airplane and is waiting on paperwork. I am not sure what that entailed but the plan is to fly it regularly.

The first order of business will be maintenance test flights, followed by training and checking.

A friend of a friend tells me that the PBY team is looking "to find someone somewhere who is really good with those engines. There is a bunch of other little stuff to take of as well, but getting the engines smooth and reliable is going to take someone really good. The engines on the PBY are P&W 1830, in pretty good shape, about 500 hrs SMOH ea. Three projects in mind for the engines: The first is to install pre-oiler kits on each engine. The second is to change the diaphragms in the carburetors. The third is to track down and repair an oil leak on the right engine. She's in a hangar and we have a good engine stand and tools."
So, if you have the skills and ability to assist, I believe you can contact the PBY team via the field's FBO:
