Abbotsford International Airshow 2009

Thu Aug 13, 2009 6:34 pm

Here are some of my shots from this past weekend. I'm starting with the good ones from the 3 hours of sun we got late in the day Sunday. There will be more to come featuring more props but it's mostly modern jet noise for now.

Any details on that ex. Canadian Forces Herc in the background? I didn't know we retired any of them.

WOW! Those are some awesome photos. Absolutely great shots. I especially love the "ugly duckling" shot of the Sabre tagging along with the Snowbirds. The other aerial shots are also as good if not better than anything I've ever seen of any formation aerobatics team flying displays.

Great work! I can't wait to see what else you have to post.

Thanks.

Great pics Spooky. Thanks
Only seen the Snowbirds once. Dayton '03. They are fan-dam-tastic.
Thunderbirds and Blue Angels only use six. Nothing wrong with that, but I'd like to see 'em try it with nine. Now THAT'S flyin'!

Mudge the impressed :drink3:

Mudge,

Hacker and I had the opportunity to see the motherlode at Abbottsford 86. The Blue Angels OPENED the show, and it was a darn good thing too. Because after them came the Snowbirds (brief intermission by the Brazilian Team in Toucano'), then the French, and finally closed by the Frecci Tri Colori (pre-accident days). Let me tell you, those Italians put everyone else to shame...nine planes all over the sky in what could only be constituted as a beautifly terrifying ballet of organized chaos.

As a military pilot, I will always appreciate the "36 inch wingtip to canopy separation" of the Blues and the Birds...the precision with big, high-powered fighters is always an impressive display of skill. But man...some of the other teams that do 'larger' formations with smaller, less-powerful aircraft are just jaw-droppingly amazing--especially if you're the #4 pilot stuck darn in the middle of the formation!

Thanks everyone! I'll have more pics up as soon as I can.

Only being out here 7 years I keep hearing about the great old Abbotsford shows, especially the ones where the Voodoo's would open the show at noon sharp by buzzing the crowd. There's certainly nothing wrong with these shows though. It's my only reasonable chance to see the Snowbirds every year and I enjoy hearing some jet noise as well.
