Chipmunk info?

Hey all,

I'm contemplating a Chipmunk project and I was just wondering if there were any Chippy specific forums or sites? I would like to do a bit of reading up on parts availability and things.

Any help appreciated!

Every year there is a so called Chip meet in Belgium where Chipmunk owners fly in their birds. Think its at Zoersel airfield.

I have never been there myself allthough out little warbird group had a Chipmunk for years before it was sold to Denmark 2 years ago.

Maybe some googling may guideto the Chip meet organisation and they should be able to help out.

Hey there,

The Chippie drivers out there, myself included, never really put together any kind of huge online presence, despite the fact that I own dhc-1.com. There have been attempts, Caldonean Chipmunks included, that go great guns for a while and then always seem to peter out. Maybe we're all just off enjoying flying our toys.

The upcoming book looks interesting. I had a discussion with Rod Brown about a year ago on this so I'm glad to finally see it brought to life. There are at least 3 other Chipmunk-specific books and scores of articles from around the globe, including my own Chippie as the featured aircraft in the AOPA pilot magazine from June 2003.

Are you in the USA? Be aware that there are some truly misguided ideas here about what a Chipmunk is, its history, etc.

So having said all that, I can volunteer to be a source of all things Chippie for you.

Feel free to PM me or ask away in this forum. After nearly 10 years of ownership I probably know a thing or two...

Thanks for the reply and offer, I may just take you up on that. I'm in Northern California.

Supposedly these two that I am looking at are ex RAF birds. Both are in pieces with one being complete and the other no firewall forward and no insturments. I'm in the process of tracking down specifics at the moment.

I was mainly looking for some resources and general information. i would like to rebuild as a stocker and possibly part out the other to recoup some of my investment.

What can you tell me about the OH on the Gypsy? I heard something about pistons from another engine that might fit? And something else mentioned about a spar mod? Parts availability/price etc.? Thats the only part I'm unsure of. I feel I can tackle the rest no problem.

The spar mod is the replacement of the fuselage lower spar. It replaces an aluminium unit with a steel replacement. It was all to do with the life extension programme on the type in the early 1970's. Not all Chipmunks have had it carried out - it's replacement is very much on fatigue life used of the subject aircraft. There is also a mod on the wing lower spar booms H.289 which is another life extension mod. All this very much depends on how much fatigue life is used up.
As for pistons - there are various ring mods to decrease oil use (basically adding an oil control ring) - I am not aware of any other pistons being of use.

Martin Shaw, in Orillia, Ontario has serial #6 and was an Engineer with Dehaviland here in Ontario. I believe he bought it as surplus from them in the 60's. It's the one that is upside down with skiis in a book available here in north America. His is apart and the last I heard was that he was restoring it.
