Neat Catalina Paint Scheme

Saw this on flickr. Never seen this blue/gray/white camo scheme before.

Standard RAF Coastal Command and RN FAA colours. Presumably a Catalina diverted to US use as a PBY. Note serial position.

Good catch, not seen the combination of British colours under US markings on a Cat before that I recall, but other examples of such combos - Mustangs, Bostons, Hudsons for land temperate scheme impressed into US use and so forth...

funny you mention that, I took an old Airpower magazine to bed last night and saw a P39 with such combo (US marks, RAF colors)

Cool pic! You can barely make out the overpainted British roundel on the right wing. I believe US manufacturers used Olive Drab and Neutral Gray to substitute for the Brit camo colors Slate Gray and Dark Sea Gray (at least that was the case on Fleet Air Arm Corsairs.)

There's been a fair bit of debate over the underside colors of US made aircraft sent to Britain..particularly Lockheed Hudsons. Some say it was a US equivalent of "Sky," (a kind of light greenish gray) while others say it was a US color called "Sky Gray" (a much grayer color.)

Looks to me like they just put her in the water...used the tug as an extra set of brakes....more so since they were fix'in to get soaked. I just finished unloading a bunch of Cat parts at Pima County Air Museum yesterday...mostly rudders, elevators, and some wing sections, out of Wa.....I had delivered the beeching gear in Wa...which in the photo, you can only see the dual tires...these were made for the Catalina flying boats...

A little info............................
I have a copy of this picture & the description reads; U.S. Navy Consilidated PBY Catalina flying boats used to train aviaton cadets at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, Texas (USA), in August 1942. 8)

I think (am not sure because I didn't well enough into the collection yet), this picture is part of a set of colour photos done in the late 30s early 40s you can find on the Lybrary of Congress page in flickr. Please see, it will pay the time you're there 1000x back!

Huh...that is so weird. My first thought when I saw that picture was "Hey, that looks like the seawall at Corpus". So to read where it really was kind of put a smile on my face. Some things (or places) just never change, I guess.

Yep, it's in there with a lot of other great shots. When I have more time I'm going to really dig into it. I did find this little gem though.

But, I wonder if this might be a Canadian-built PB2B?

"The Squadron Signals PBY in Action book" cover has a PBY in similar colors. But I think on the cover its showing a USAAC OA-10?? Could this be a OA-10? I am guessing not since I see USN uniforms. :?:

I wish I could see the photo. All I get is a red X with image beside it. I even right clicked and then clicked "show photo" and nothing. :(
