Here is the link to the story of the B-17 with the nose blown off. I've seen the first photo hundreds of times but not the last two, nor have I heard the story.

Thanks for the back story on what I've always thought was one of the most horrible photos of what flak can do and the strength and resolve of those crews to wrestle something that looked like that back hundreds of miles to base. Truly the greatest generation-
Maybe a display like that should be placed in an aviation museum in a diorama setting showing the crew leaving the aircraft. HILL AFB displays a BT-15 in a nosed over scene with mannequins in the cockpit and on the ground, quite effective!
