Spitfire #3 for Vintage Wings of Canada

Hey folks,

I hadn't seen this posted on here yet, but I thought it was newsworthy.

Looks like VWoC has acquired Spitfire XIVc RM873, and is currently undergoing restoration in England.

This particular Spit saw wartime service with 401 & 402 Squadrons RCAF and later went to Thailand.

edit- Just to clarify, in case anyone didn't know, Spitfire #2 is Mk IX TE294, the Y2-K Spitfire.

Yeah, I'm jealous.

I'm jealous as to how one organization can have three Spits, and then there be none in BC (heck, Western Canada) except for Bob Jens's here in Vancouver which is not easily accessible by the public and does not appear at airshows.

I wish I had offered the Canadian Forces a couple hundred dollars for Y2K before VWoC did... haha

Anyways, I'm glad another spit is coming to Canada, but a little annoyed that I'll never see it unless I go to Ontario/Quebec.

P.S. I'm not upset with Mr. Jens for not operating his Spitfire at local airshows. In fact he has been tremendously hospitable with letting me come and see his planes from time to time.

John Sessions has one coming to his collection in Everett hopefully in the not to distant future. At least they're getting closer and it'll fly too!

that's some good news! I suppose some other good news that will make the rest of the globe jealous of the Pacific North West is Bob Jens's Mosquito getting ever closer to flight status.

I have yet to hear the latest on the restoration over in Victoria, but as noted on www.mossie.org, the Mosquito is supposed to be completed by March of 2010. That's a pretty darn quick rebuild, so I figure it may be more realistic to say sometime in mid to late summer of 2010.

I'll take an opportunity for a rant here. Nothing is better than seeing a bunch of Spits in the air, in fact nothing is even as good. But we have a lot of great Spits in this country that are part of flying collections but rarely or never fly. What is up with that? There's the Cavanaugh VIII that's airworthy but parked. Lone Star's was near-airworthy but parked, then it got a salt water bath, don't know what to say about it now. I saw Kermit's XVI last week, nice airplane stuffed way back in the hangar, clearly parked. Who has seen Lewis' V in the air since OSH a couple of years ago? I don't know if Blair airs out his V or not. I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting. Is it just that owners don't find flying Spits fun enough to be motivated to get them annualled and go flying? Bill G. could you please talk some sense into these people? Do we need a North American Gathering of Spitfires and Legends to persuade folks to dust the cobwebs off these planes? Anyway, props to Potter, Russell, Duffy, Frasca, Beasley, Friedkin, Allen, and the others in this continent, and in advance to Sessions, Bill G. and CAF, who do or will give us a look at their planes. Rant off.

The John Sessions one is painted in its original Czech AF post-WW2 scheme, and is I believe very close to flying.
