Background Study (P-51Ds)

Thu Apr 28, 2005 5:06 pm

Hi gang,

I thought it would take till tomorrow, but I finished this little background study in pencil for my Mustangs at Dawn sooner than I thought.

I did this to begin nailing down my cloud positions, shapes and tones. I left the two main aircraft outlines in place to help position my darks and lights in order to best support the aircraft. The artist has the advantage of picking and choosing his values and shapes and placing them where necessary. The next step is to finish the outlines of the four aircraft (the far two kites will eventually be placed roughly in the lower left center of the composition), then do a slightly larger final pencil study of the entire scene, then the oil study, and then finally the final painting.

Cheers!
Wade

Hi Wade--

Way cool...Are we going to get to see Mustangs At Dawn develop via WIX? :D

I usually try to post the same pics on the various boards that I post on my site as each painting develops. I have found that just about everybody loves to see how each piece comes to life.

My site's "In Progress" pages feature the development of several of my past major works . . . this particular painting's page can be found here: http://wademeyersart.tripod.com/id68.html

BTW, I didn't feel like setting up the DSLR and getting a good shot of the background study; seems I can never get a decent scan of my "artwork" . . . with my Wal-Mart scanner the image always ends up too contrasty, and much of the subtle effect is lost. Tomorrow morning I'll reshoot it with the Canon and repost a better (hopefully) image on my site. I *really* need a better and bigger scanner!

Thx,

Wade
