Earthquake in Canada...

Wed Jun 23, 2010 3:22 pm

Is all our Canadian friends ok? On the news reported a 5.5 earthquake and the shockwave came down into Pa here and reports are the Steamtown mall shook a bit as well!

We also had a tornado last night in my county of Pennsylvania.

I'm in Ottawa, one of the closest major cities to the epicenter and it wasn't really that bad. Kinda neat actually. Reported damage is little to none but a lot of buidlings were evacuated as a precaution. The control tower at the airport was evacuated for about 10 to 15 minutes but all went back to normal fairly quickly.

They've spent the last two hours talking about it on the news. Interviewing witnesses and experts trying to figure out why there was no warning given, who is responsible, whether it could happen again, and the emotional trauma that this has caused the "victims". Gotta love media sensationalism. :Hangman:

Warbirdcrew,Well, it is Toronto.

I was near Buttonville Airport in the car at a light and the car started to shake up and down. No big vehicle near me shake the ground and no wind it was really weird. All I could think is it must have been an earthquake but we never really get them hear and when I do hear of them I never feel it. A few minutes later I heard the control tower talking to a pilot about the earthquake. I don’t think there was any damage but it is the first earthquake in these parts I have felt.

We had the hangar shake pretty good here in Hamilton, Ontario. I have felt 3 other small quakes at the airport since 1984, and this was the biggest I have felt. The hangar walls and steel bracing were rattling against each other.

No damage that I have heard of anywhere around here.

The VWoC hanager is close to the epicentre we had just launched Rob in Hawk 1 for his first flight. The quake hit while he was in the air. They closed the Ottawa tower , good thing was he had the circuit all to himself. One of the guys on the ramp said he could see it coming accross the field. Only minor damage cracks in the floor etc,

I am in Ottawa as well. We rarely get tremors (maybe once every 5+ years), and when they do happen they are just a small vibe which could be mistaken for a large truck driving by. This time the "trucks" kept coming, then things really started to move, and it all seemed to last about 20+ seconds. I know 5.5 is nothing really, any Haitian could tell you that, but here in Ottawa... it was quite the experience for me when the cubical walls started moving side to side and crap was falling from the ceiling tiles and buzzers and alarms started going off.

I know, I know... you guys in So Cal must be laughing at this, but I would have to say WOW! Chalk up another first for me today.
