Crew is OK: Tanker 44 Off Runway in Colorado

Sun Jun 27, 2010 2:38 pm

Neptune Aviation P-2V N1386C #44 overran the runway at a Colorado airport
yesterday. CNN reports that the brakes on the aircraft failed. The good
news is that there were no injuries. Here's a link to an article.

much better reporting than our local "media"

they had everything from "aircraft trying to land" to "hard landing" and everything in-between :axe:

I'll post a link to some photos I took this evening - sad to see the aircraft like this but glad the crew are ok.

It was a complete hydraulic failure just prior to landing. No brakes,no emergency brakes, engines bogged down in reverse at a 5000 ft elevation airport on a hot day.I have nightmares about that sort of a scenario. The pilot has 30 years experience flying P-2 tankers,so inexperience wasn't a factor. Here are a couple of links with brief videos concerning the aftermath of the incident/accident.

That is lucky on so many levels for the pilots (and any motorists that might have been passing) to emerge unscathed.

I heard from a Neptune mechanic that they are going to try to fix the plane and keep flying it. The belly needs to be reskinned and the engines and props replaced. Neptune has a hanger down in Colorado and will get the plane airworthy there, if the plane's back is not broken.
Neptune Aviation bought a BAe 146 converted into a water bomber. if that plane works in the rugged mountains, expect the company to buy more and eventually ground their P-2Vs

Slinky, I like the way you worded the title, starting with "Crew Okay." Since there was a very lively thread on how to handle that a while back, it sounds to me like a great opener. No one panics like with " X airplane down" as the lead.
