Australian War Memorial aircraft

Hi all

I was stuck in Canberra last friday and decided to go to the AWM for a few hours as I was at a loose end and there isn't much to do down there.

I didn't have my camera with me which I was really annoyed about until I realised that I had my snazzy new camera phone !!! wonders of modern science

Well here are a few very fuzzy photos of a few of the aircraft which I must say are very well presented in the main although it is much too dark and unfortunately kids are easily able to put their sticky fingers on aircraft such as the mosquito,

There is a storage facility over in another area of Canberra which holds the rest of the collection on limited (time) display.

I would really reccomend a visit to anybody going to Canberra.

Dark walls and ceilings don't help the lighting much. Is there a dent in the P-51 spinner or is it some odd shadowing?

Sometimes trying to put in an automatic link to a photo located in one of the picture warehousing sites can be a problem. I had to right click on the little white box with the red x to find the properties which gave me the URL of the photo. I then had to copy and paste the URL. Not exactly quick since you have to do it for each photo but it works. I think the first and last photos are the same.

Thanks for posting.

A few have sent me questions about the pics and appear to have no trouble loading them , however others have such as your good selves.

I have no trouble loading them at any machine unless it is hooked up to a LAN which doesn't allow access to Webshots pics. Sooooooooooooooooo

Scott you may wish to use the shots - poor as they are as registry shots until I can get back there with a decent camera.

They keep the aircraft in the dark to preserve them i think.
The Kittyhawk came from Nelson Wilson the wing is original but the fuse was rebuilt and re skinned. The cowls were hand made and the exhausts came from a K or N model.For a bunch of volunteers it looks good.

The wings were totally rebuilt as was the fuselage. It was totally rewired by his son Greg (now georgina?)

He had 4 NOS engines before the divorse forced the sale.

Was there also a Halifax instrument panel lurking somewhere in the dark? AFAIK they used to have one liberated from an RAAF kite.

Hi Cees

They have a huge cache of parts and whilst I don't remember an instrument panel there are indeed a lot of Halifax instrumentation items mentioned on the Manifest for the collection.

I will follow up on what they have for you.
