The annual Memorial Day service was held this morning at Madingley American Cemetary near Cambridge in somewhat inclement weather.
There was still a good turnout, however, in remembrance of those who gave their lives in WWII and in conflicts up to the present day, and commemorating 60 years since Victory in Europe.
Those remembered included the 3,813 interred at Madingley, and the more than 5,000 commemorated on the Wall of the Missing, including Major Alton Glenn Miller USAAF, who disappeared on a flight from the UK to Paris on 15th December 1944.
Due to the ongoing politicking surrounding the question of insurance for the Duxford-based B-17G 'Sally B', she was sadly unable to attend this year. However, a pair of P-51Ds, Maurice Hammond's 'Janie' and Rob Davies' 'Big Beautiful Doll' provided an admirable tribute.
The planned 16-ship F-15 flypast from the 48th FW at Lakenheath was reduced to a single 4-ship of F-15Cs for 'operational reasons', who performed the traditional 'missing man' formation.
