Thanks, "Lightning," for posting the link to Fred Hagen's video of Sully's P-38. I had not seen the video...although I HAVE seen "Mareelle II" in New Guinea! I am the producer of Injury Slight...Please Advise, and I came across these posts while looking for an article online about Charles O'Sullivan. He spoke to a group of school kids yesterday for a special Veteran's Day event. He's still going strong at 95 years old!
During production on the film, we traveled to New Guinea to photograph the P-38 wreckage. We also captured a very detailed interview with a native elder near Brahmin, the mission point Hagen mentions in his brief video. Unfortunately, the river was a little deeper than it is in Hagen's video, so we were not able to browse around the wreck quite as much. Not to mention that we went in on the ground - no helicopter - and were only able to spend a few minutes with the P-38 before making the return trip back to Brahmin - 7 miles through the jungle. We did build a detailed mock up of the P-38 for the film. There are a few photos on our website, and some behind-the-scenes footage of its construction that is on the DVD. The mock-up is 1:1 scale, and is currently on display at the Museum of Military History in Jacksonville, Arkansas.
