I agree. He certainly couldn't WIN a dogfight with a P-51...but he could easily NOT LOSE one.

Heck, even when we were training for ACM in the P-3....yes, the P-3...the object was to use size and (lack of) speed to your advantage and even if you could momentarily disrupt the firing solution of the guy trying to shoot you down, he would most likely overshoot because of the speed difference, and would take a while to get back in position again.

Would it have actually WORKED? I have serious doubts, and Hacker would probably be laughing his a$$ off right now reading this, but....

The aerobatic plane is a hell of a lot more maneuverable and I agree could fly circles up, down, inside, and around that P-51 in an air combat maneuvering engagement and never let him get a workable firing solution. Can't shoot him, and can't outrun him, so run him low on fuel and wait for him to head home...and you live another day.

My thoughts as well.

The Mustang would have to boom-n-zoom and spray-n-pray. It certainly wouldn't want to mix it up low and slow.

I can't remember the precise details of the Grasshopper being chased by the Fw-190 or Bf-109 in France. The Grasshopper pilot flew around a tree until the German either ran low on fuel, ammo or interest and left.

I also recall similar stories of an Israeli observation pilot who managed to cause an Egyptian pilot to fly into the sea, in the very early years of the Arab-Israeli conflicts. Can't recall the details though.

Late in the day 9/11, after the attacks in New York, the Ore Guard was scrambled out of PDX to intercept an 'unknown bogey'. 2 F-15's went roaring around the Portland metroplex with everything shoved up against the far left corner booming and zooming and scaring the living h&ll out of everyone searching for one old guy in his red STINSON 105E (kinda like they did here a few months ago when a guy flew his 180 on pontoons into Kenmore @ the North end of Lake Washington while the Prez was in Seattle, he was East of the mountains and had no idea about the closed airspaces, and to be fair, Seattle Center never did advise the guy while enroute either). They never did find the guy in the STINSON, he continued on and landed @ Troutdale and hangered his airplane. He did call OGUARD the next day to see if he was the cause of all the fuss............... 'look, a crow sandwich on a COLD plate'

When I was on AWACS @ Boeing, the Air Force did do a lookie loo into using the standard 'buddy engine' hard points built into every 707 wing originally used to ferry engines, as a possible mounting point for AIM9's, hows that for a big a$$ed fighter?

well.......you can't outrun the mustang, you can't outdive the mustang and you can't outclimb the mustang. Sure, it can be outturned but even at a slow speed the mustang could shred it up. A couple twist and turns could buy you some time but a round or two of .50 cal could make you eat the ground. Mustang wins!
