A Catalina fly again in France

You know it with the C-FCRR immatriculation but now in N9767.
He sunk a U-Boot on April 1944 when he fly for 162 Sqd of the RCAF.
He more known when he participate for French Tv with Nicolas Hulot during Okavongo.

I participated of his restoration.

You probably see during Airshow in 2011 and after...

Just a little update about this Canso (previously registered CF-CRR) and recently registered in the USA as N9767.

This aircraft is not a PBY-5A built by CONSOLIDATED VULTEE but a 285ACF built in Canada by "Boeing Canada" as aircraft "9767" during the war at Sea Island BC (now the Vancouver Airport)

Pilot Officer Tom Cooke was awarded the DFC along with his crew for sinking a sub off the coast of Iceland. Tom died a couple of years ago but just a few months before his death Tom was inducted into the Canadian Aviation Hall of Fame.

One of the previous operators of this aircraft was Canadian Pacific Airlines (CPA) that used the aircraft to service the Canadian west coast. Avalon Aviation operated this aircraft as a waterbomber from western Canada and Parry Sound before selling the aircraft to an enthusiastic French aviator and entrepreneur in 1994.

Its great to see 9767 back in the air.

Below C-FCRR is seen at Perry Sound airport when Avalon was selling off it’s fleet of Cansos.



It later returned to Ontario for servicing at Oshawa Airport’s Enterprise Air.

"9767" (C/n 21996) is one of the 55 aircrafts build from Consolidated manufactured parts... for the RCAF as Canso A. American Father & Canadian Mother ;o)) In fact, "28-5ACF" is the designation (post-war) given to some original PBY-5A, Canso A & Co after commercial conversions... "Model 28" is the primary designation of Consolidated for the type (civilian).

I recommend the fantastic book of David Legg: "Consolidated PBY Catalina - The Peacetime Record" (Airlife) ... the Bible for all lovers of that plane... The reference!!!!

In fact there are, arguably, more than three airworthy Catalinas in Europe - the obvious ones are G-PBYA (the most active by a long shot) followed by PH-PBY and C-FCRR/N9767, both of which have flown again after recent periods of inactivity. Depending on what definition of 'airworthy' is used (I don't want to start a thread on that!), there is also N423RS at North Weald which last flew almost 13 months ago and 5B-PBY registered in Cyprus but resident in Greece and which flies occasionally although I do not have a date for its most recent flight.

'SPang' is generous in his praise of my book but it is now ten years old, out of print and out of date! The 'Survivors' section, by its very nature, was always bound to get morwe and more innacurate as time passed In addition, the book was largely put together in pre-internet/e-mail times and a lot more info and some corrections have come to light. I should think there is minimal chance of a revised edition (Airlife ceased trading not long after it was published) but I do intend producing a privatey distributed update at some point.

BTW, the submarine sunk by RCAF9767/C-FCRR/N9767 was U-342.
