Bf109E-1/E7 3523 5./JG5 now in Chino- ARTICLE

Mon Jan 31, 2011 7:58 am

Hi all - another article for you to enjoy.

This was a beauty of a recovery/history.eally had to do some in depth research with the help of some aviation colleague.

First question without reading the text?
How did it get a 20mm cannon shell hit the engine block but not through the cowling!

It is now in Chino and I am sure she is going to be restored.

I have been asked to look at her pre 1942 history - 1939-41. This is a bit difficult as after 18 months service she was stripped back to bare metal. No previous markings visible so without photos or log book entries we have no idea (currently) where she served.

Enjoy.

regards

Mark

Once again, another fantastic piece- you called in the "big guns" on that one, and it paid off very handsomely.

Cheers!

This was discussed in one of the magazines about the bullet hit. The cowlings were removed when it was on the lake surface possibly for recovery of parts thats why the cowlings show now damage from the bullet.

Peter

Go to the top of the class and get a gold star.

Been so many other discussions - on the DB601A, camouflage, the pilot and so on.

As always - the Bof B history is wanted though why it could not be restored in the markings or Red 6 of 5./JG5 and fly again Hurricane AM274 being restored in Soviet colours - I do not know.

Mark

I'm kind of partial to the tropical paint scheme myself, especially since "Black 6" was grounded years ago. I figure it would cast a good contrast against the other airworthy 109's.

I had the privilege of seeing Black 6 close up this past September at RAF Hendon :)
