PT-26 DOWN

Thu Jun 16, 2005 2:17 pm

I am very sad to report a loss close to home. The PT-26 assigned to The Dixie Wing of the CAF has gone down near Williamson GA with the loss of two persons on board. The only details I have is from an eye witness at Peach State Airport that said the airplane was taking off and that it appeared to have stalled & went into the trees. The names of the pilots have not been released yet. This strikes close to the heart for me. I have not been active with the Dixie Wing for sometime, but I was a founding member & the first Maintenance Officer, & this was the first airplane we were assigned. The Wing completely went through this aircraft after we got it & it was a nice machine. You won't find a finner bunch of folks than the Dixie Wing. My heart goes out to them. God Bless all involved.

And my thoughts and prayers as well. I know a bunch of the Dixie Wing folks, and they are all good people. I am really heartsick about this, on a lot of levels....

I have been in touch with some of you thru private mail concerning questions about the PT-26, & flap settings etc.... . Thank you to the guys that contacted me & also for not making our conversations public, as we all know how quick opinions & rumor control can get out of hand. There has been an NTSB preliminary report posted today over on the NTSB site. Its reported the airplane made a downwind takeoff, & the flaps were found extended at the crash site.
