Well it looks like they have another tale to chase...
From today's AVwebFlash...
A report from Papua New Guinea says the wreck of an aircraft that might be the Lockheed Electra flown by Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan has been found on a reef near Bougainville Island near Papua New Guinea. The Papua New Guinea Post Courier is reporting "armed men" are guarding the area over a reef off Matsungan Island where an aircraft matching the description of Earhart's plane has been found. Divers are now checking the wreck and inquiries are flooding in from all over the world. There is no word on whether any human remains have been recovered.

If the plane is Earhart's, it will help to solve a 78-year-old mystery surrounding her disappearance on a leg of a pan Pacific flight leg from New Guinea to Howell Island in July of 1934. Local sources told the newspaper the existence of the wreck has been known for years. Government officials say it belongs to Papua New Guinea and they'll be defending that claim.

if this pans out,and Mr.Gillespie is correct,I owe him an apology,so far all we have is a sole from a womans shoe and an aluminium box from an airplane.I hope he's right.(kinda doubt it).

Does anyone else think that this gullibility reflects on the general state of the media? It's embarrassing, really!

It is Ryan. When you think about all the hard working research organizations out there that would love to have media coverage like that. Here we have a group that has sucked in a ton in donations and all they are offering up is literally a "clump" of #2...

More on the Bougainville story...

Bougainville clampdown on 'Earhart wreck'

Residents of Bougainville island say no one will be allowed to travel to an area where 1930s aviator Amelia Earhart's plane wreckage may have been found.

Papua New Guinea's Post Courier newspaper says an aircraft fitting the description of Earhart's Lockheed 10E Electra is resting 70 metres deep on a reef north-west of Buka island, at the northern tip of Bougainville.

Two investigators, David Mona and businessman Cletus Harepa, headed a group that carried out an expedition to confirm the finding.

They have warned that any divers from overseas or outside Bougainville planning a trip to the crash site would have to seek permission from them.

Mr Mona says his group has been working on the expedition for 11 years since 2000.

Amelia Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan disappeared in the area in 1937 in what is regarded as one of the greatest mysteries in aviation.

Am I wrong, or is this another group and Tighar has no connection to this latest airplane in the ocean near Bouganville?

Re: TIGHAR makes it to CNN...

Bill you are correct. There dosent seem to be any connection between the two groups.

I look forward to hearing what the second group comes up with in Bougainville.

Although as WallyB pointed out I am sure there were alot of twin engine twin tailed aircraft that went down during the war...

Mr Mona says his group has been working on the expedition for 11 years since 2000.

And in all that time they haven't taken the time to compare the footprint of a Lockheed 10 E with a PV-1?

Will someone please send CNN a copy of the expert testimony from Cousin Vinny re: the 1963 Pontiac Tempest and the 1964 Buick Skylark....

Regarding the newest forensic find "Dr. Berry's Freckle Ointment" jar....I absolutely refuse to be consulted on this by TIGHAR or CNN....and I put that in writing by (uncharacteristically) signing my name to this post...

D[.]R. Berry....

Funny when you enquire a little more, as there are stories by the villager of a 20 feet long snake guarding the wreck and some gold beinghidden in it. There have been, it seems, quite a few attempts to dive that wreck in the last years, as it was discovered in 2002, but the missions were not "completed" because of stong currents and others diving related problems. Plus the wreck is encrusted with corrals. Add to the equation that 70 m, or 220 feet, starts to be some serious technical diving.
Curious to read the outcome of this.

I saw a silver, twin tailed, twin engined aircraft just yesterday. It also had a door on the left side of the rear cabin just like hers. No myth, I can even take you right to it, and no SCUBA diving necessary. A small fee would be expected of course. For a large fee and a few weeks, I can get you a flight in it.
It could be hers.
I also saw a Japanese pilot near this aircraft within the last year, how intrigueing is that?

PS. I didn't see any jars of freckle cream, but I'd throw that in as part of the fee as there is a Walgreens nearby.
There is also a semi secret U S govt agency nearby, within 5 miles, and they might be hiding something. And Lockheed has a plant about 30 miles away and I promise they have some secrets there.
All part of the fee, please don't hesitate to phone me.

For those interested in the topic, there is an interesting alternate theory discussion in vintage:
