Dominican Mustangs in the 80's

Sat Mar 05, 2011 7:52 am

Does anyone remember seeing the TV show where some treasure hunters were off of the Dominican Republic in the early 1980's and they got buzzed by Dominican P-51's? I was just floored by the fact that they were still flying them. its a great sight for warbird freaks like me(or just freaks like me) great footage.sorry I cant remember the name of the show.

I remember seeing that. They were not just buzzed. The Mustangs were flying top cover to prevent rivals from poaching the site.

Around that time a Cuban gunboat violated Dominican waters and the Mustangs strafed it. Then a flight of Cuban Mig 23s buzzed the Dominican Air Force base. Someone asked the Dominican AF pilots what did they do? The answer; "What could we do? We went back inside and sat down."

i was in the dominican republic in 2007 & was planning a warbird excursion while the wife stayed at the resort to tan. i was advised it was to dangerous to do so, so i bagged the idea with the advice from once in a while wix poster tulio.
