P-51B part id assistance

Sun Mar 27, 2011 11:07 am

Hello WIX,
Could I please get some assistance. We were recently cleaning up some of my Grandfather's tools and came across a bucket identified as "P-51B." Most pieces were small rivets, nuts, and bolts, but there were a couple of items we didn't recognize.

One piece about 2 inches long by one inch in width reads, "A-13541-16k"

The other piece reads, "Rear right hand." C-77408-9. It's roughly two inches by two inches and has been machined.

Thanks, Julie

quick edit: Thanks to a friend, here's a photo.

Welcome to the forum! Always cool to see parts. A lot of folks here with a LOT of knowledge. Pics...YUP...always good to have pics. Photobucket is a good, FREE, service that works pretty well.

. and try to place the part on a ruler or steel scale so we know what the basic dimensions are......and focus. Too many parts I.D. requests come with nicely defined end tables across the room and a fuzzy blob as the subject...

Thanks for the welcome Air Lords Holedigger and The Inspector.

Below is a link with photos. (I took them before reading tips from The Inspector). I placed a quarter next to the parts so you can determine the size.

Please let me know if you can id the parts. Thanks, j

I am confident that both those parts are from a .50 caliber machine gun. They would not be exclusive to the P-51B however and could be found on nearly every WW2 vintage combat aircraft.

Here's one of those pieces from a semi-auto .50 cal I built up some years ago:

And I think you'll be able to see part of the other piece on the side of the gun:

I concur with BDK. These parts are feed way parts for the Browning ANM2 50 cal machine gun. They were used on all M2 50 cal guns both ground and air so it may have come out of a P-51B but it is a common part for guns used in all aircraft during and after the war.

Good eye BDK! Anyone who can recognize 50 cal parts is OK with me!

Hi Julie,

As the others have said, both are parts of a .50 cal M2.

A-13541: Stripper, Link
C-77408: Stop, Cartridge (R. H. Rear)

Good clear exploded diagram and parts list HERE.

All the best,
PB
